What the industry is really building toward

From the year's design and technology shows, four themes matter to the people who shape homes: light, wellness, automation, and voice.

Each year the builders, designers, and integrators who shape homes gather at shows like CEDIA to see what is coming. Cut through it, and a few themes keep returning — human-centric lighting, wellness, automation, and voice control — and each one increasingly runs through the design process rather than beside it.

Human-centric lighting leads. Tunable systems mimic the way daylight shifts across a day, adjusting colour temperature to follow the body's rhythms and easing the artificial blue light that disrupts sleep at night. For a designer, it is a live tool — light that can change how a finish, a fabric, or a piece of art reads in a room.

Wellness has widened to mean the whole home. Thoughtful design accounts for how people actually live, their routines, comfort, and ease, and technology now helps the elderly and those with disabilities control lighting, climate, and more by voice, extending how long a home stays livable for them.

The through-line is partnership. As these systems take a larger share of a project's budget, the cost of getting them wrong rises with it, and designers are bringing in a technology integrator early rather than late. With more than fifteen years designing and installing these systems, that is the seat we are built for.
